Specialised Driving Lenses
See the difference with our Essilor driving lenses options. Whether it’s bright low sun, oncoming headlights, or changing light levels, driving can be visually demanding. Our new specialised driving lenses are designed to help you see more clearly and comfortably, whatever the conditions.
Unlike ordinary photochromic lenses, these lenses are engineered specifically for drivers. These lenses
- Reduce glare from sunlight and headlights for more comfortable vision
- Darken extra quickly and go darker than standard lenses – even behind a windscreen
- Feature polarising technology to cut reflected glare from wet roads and car bonnets
- Include a contrast-enhancing surface treatment to help you see more detail in low light or twilight
- Are available in both single-vision and varifocal designs
Perfect for anyone who spends time behind the wheel, whether it’s your daily commute, weekend drives, or longer journeys, these lenses give you sharper, clearer and more relaxed vision on the road.
Performance & Technology
Ordinary photochromic lenses stop working behind a car windscreen because UV light can’t reach them. Traditional photochromic lenses contain molecules that react to UV radiation by darkening. Because modern car windscreens filter out nearly all UV light, the reaction can’t occur effectively. As a result, the lenses remain clear even when the sunlight outside is intense, reducing their usefulness for drivers.
Unlike ordinary photochromic lenses, Transitions® XTRActive™ lenses don’t rely solely on UV light to change. They also react to visible light, which passes easily through car windscreens. This means they darken effectively even while driving, giving better protection from glare and bright sunlight.
Our new driving, optimised lenses therefore darken perfectly even inside your car.
Combined with built in polarisation to cut reflections from wet roads and a precision coating that enhances contrast in low light, they deliver exceptional clarity and comfort wherever the road takes you.
Key advantages:
- Sharp, glare free vision in bright sunlight
- Reduced dazzle from oncoming headlights
- Better detail recognition in dusk or rain
- Seamless comfort when driving long distances
Night time Safety & Comfort
Oncoming headlights, LED streetlamps and reflective signs can all cause discomfort and blur at night. These lenses are designed to filter out harsh glare and boost contrast, so you see more detail and feel more in control when driving after dark.
They don’t just protect your eyes, they protect your confidence behind the wheel.
Even if you don’t drive all day, these lenses make a noticeable difference whenever you do.
From the school run to late, night motorway journeys, they adapt instantly to changing light and help your eyes stay relaxed and focused. And because they’re available in both single vision and varifocal designs, we can tailor them precisely to how you see.
Driving comfort in challenging light

Which lens option is right for you?
Different drivers need different solutions. Some people mainly struggle with reflections and glare at night, while others need lenses that adapt to bright sunlight, low sun or changing light conditions. We will always advise on the most suitable option for your prescription, lifestyle and driving needs.
Crizal Drive
Crizal Drive is a specialist anti-reflective coating designed to reduce distracting reflections, particularly when driving at night. It helps minimise glare from oncoming headlights and improve contrast, giving clearer and more comfortable vision on the road.
Road Pilot
Road Pilot was developed specifically with drivers in mind, bringing together lens technology and coatings designed to improve comfort behind the wheel. It aimed to support clearer vision in changing light conditions and reduce the visual fatigue often associated with longer journeys.
Varilux Road Pilot
Varilux Road Pilot was created for drivers who wear varifocals. It was designed to help with the frequent changes of focus involved in driving, such as shifting from the road ahead to mirrors, sat navs, dashboards and instruments. The goal was smoother transitions and more comfortable vision while driving.
Transitions XTRActive Polarised
Unlike ordinary photochromic lenses, Transitions XTRActive Polarised lenses react to both UV and visible light, allowing them to darken even behind a car windscreen. As they darken outdoors, they also become polarised, helping to reduce reflected glare from wet roads, shiny surfaces and low sun. The result is more comfortable vision and less visual strain in bright conditions.
Our approach
The best driving lens is not always the most expensive or the most technically advanced. The right choice depends on your prescription, how often you drive, the time of day you drive most and the challenges you experience. We take time to understand your needs before recommending a solution designed specifically for how you see and drive.
Is a driving lens right for you?
Driving-specific lenses are particularly helpful for people who struggle with glare, low sun, night driving or long hours behind the wheel. They’re not a quick add-on, but a considered choice based on how and when you drive. Driving lenses typically form part of a complete eyewear solution and are discussed as part of a personalised consultation.
