Choosing the right optician matters. Our guide covers the 10 most important things to consider when selecting who to trust with your eyecare—download it to make sure you’re asking the right questions.
Why should I choose an independent optometry practice?
If you are not happy with your current optometry practice.
If you are uninspired by their choice of eyewear.
If you want access to the most up to date equipment such as OCT and Optomap laser eye scanning.
If you want to feel your relationship is one of value rather than being just transactional, then independent optometry practice many be for you.
As independent optometrists we believe in building relationships with our patients and many have been with the practice since they were children. Because we are independent, we choose the pace at which we work and the products we sell and this allows us to nurture these relationships and always be able to do the right thing by our customers.

Are your glasses expensive?
Expense is a relative thing. We hope all our customers feel they have received good value. Certainly patients often conmment on how long their eyewear has lasted compared with pieces purchased elsewhere.
Many optometry chains offer basic eyewear for significantly less than our entry level but equally, some boutique practices stock far more expensive frames collections.
We offer our patients the option, to spread their payments over 10 months, interest free with no credit checks and find this to be a very popular option.
Why invest in premium eyewear?
Spectacles can be divided into two distinct parts, the frame and the lenses. The quality of the lenses has a direct bearing on the quality of your vision so it always makes sense to invest in the best.
When it comes to frames, the choice is yours, but having invested in quality lenses, there seems little point in putting them in cheap frames that will not wear well.
And this pair of glasses is going to sit in plain sight, in the middle of your face, for all to see so, would you not want to pick a pair in which you look good and that express your personality?
Badly fitting glasses are uncomfortable and deliver variable vision, so it pays to have a pair that fits you. We ensure that every frame we sell fits well and is comfortable. And if that is not the case, our 60-day Love Your Glasses Warrantee means that you can change your frame and lenses if you find that they are not perfectly comfortable for you.
Tell me more about your Payment Plan?
We’ll discuss frame and lens options to suit your needs and budget.
you can pay a deposit and then spread the remaining payments for your glasses over three to ten months with 0% finance and no credit checks.
You’ll wear your new glasses for two years or more, so we thought you might like to divide the payments with no interest, credit checks, or hoops to jump through.
Do I need an appointment or can I just pop in?
Planning Your Visit
Whilst we are always delighted to receive visitors, we do find that booking ahead works rather better for everyone involved. As a small, dedicated team, we like to ensure we can give you our full attention without the worry of keeping anyone waiting.
By arranging an appointment in advance, we can set aside proper time to discuss your needs thoroughly—whether that’s a routine eye test, finding new frames, or sorting out any concerns you might have with your current eyewear. It also means we can have any relevant information to hand and won’t be rushing through your consultation.
Of course, if you find yourself passing by and need something urgent sorted, do pop in and we’ll do our best to help. However, for the most comprehensive service and to avoid any disappointment, a quick call beforehand really does make all the difference.
To book your appointment, simply give us a ring during business hours. We’ll find a time that suits you both.
Can I come on a Saturday?
Saturday Services
We’re pleased to welcome patients on Saturdays for frame selection and adjustments. In fact, many of our patients find Saturday visits particularly enjoyable as we don’t carry out eye examinations that day—which means we can dedicate our full attention to helping you find the perfect frames or ensuring your current glasses are sitting comfortably.
Without the usual schedule of sight tests, we have much more flexibility to spend proper time with you. You can browse our collection at a leisurely pace, try on as many frames as you’d like, and we can discuss all the options without any time pressures. It’s rather nice to have that relaxed atmosphere for what should, after all, be an enjoyable experience.
For adjustments and repairs, Saturday is often ideal too—we can take the time to get everything sitting just right without worrying about keeping other appointments waiting.
If you do need an eye examination, we’ll happily arrange that for a weekday when our full testing services are available. Many patients actually prefer this approach: a thorough eye test during the week, then a relaxed Saturday visit to choose their new frames.
Give us a ring to book your Saturday appointment—we rather look forward to having the extra time to help you properly.
Do you have lots of frames to choose from?
Finding Your Perfect Frames
At Jacksons, we rather believe that choosing spectacles should be an enjoyable experience, not a case of making do with whatever happens to be available. That’s why we’ve built up quite an extensive collection over the years—several hundred frames in all manner of shapes, sizes, and colours, from classic styles that never go out of fashion to more contemporary designs for those wanting something a bit different.
We’ve found that having a proper selection makes all the difference. Whether you’re after something understated for everyday wear, a bold statement piece, or perhaps a spare pair in a completely different style, we can usually find several options that work well with your face shape and personal preferences.
For those seeking something truly individual, our Lindberg and Tom Davies collections offer bespoke options. These can be tailored specifically to your measurements and style preferences—perhaps a particular colour combination that isn’t available off the shelf, or adjustments to the frame dimensions for a perfect fit. There’s a modest additional charge for this service, but many patients find it worthwhile for frames that are genuinely unique to them.
The key is taking time to explore the possibilities—we’re always happy to pull out various options until we find something you’re genuinely pleased with.
I don’t know what would suit me – will you help me choose?
Absolutely! Our reputation, and our customers future comfort and happiness depend upon selecting the right frames / lens combination. We are not going to leave that to chance!
We sit down with our patients to discuss what their hopes and expectations. We investigate any problems they have encountered historically and discuss their visual needs. This allows us to make recommendations on lens and frame design.
We are honest too! We are not the sort of place where you will be told you look fantastic which every frame you try on.
Our role is to help customers find a frame they will be delighted with for years to come so we always give an honest opinion on how things look and fit.
I just don’t suit glasses!
We have not had a customer yet where we failed to find a frame suiting both their looks and personality! It can be a shock when you see yourself in glasses for the first time or try a style different to what you are used to.
But bear with it! Give yourself a moment!
Often its just a matter of finding the right shape and colours to suit and then selecting a well fitting frame.
And dont go worrying about big noses, wonky ears etc. We are all individuals!
We choose our stock thinking about real people. So we buy frames for large heads, small heads, big and little noses, pale skins, dark skins….. you get the picture.
Most frames can be adjusted but the most comefortable ones are always to ones which feel perfect without too much tweeking – which is part of the reason we have so much stock!

How do I care for my eyewear?
Caring for Your Glasses
We’ve put together a helpful guide that covers everything you need to know about looking after your glasses properly. Of course, if you’re still unsure about anything after reading it, do please ask—we’re always happy to help with any questions about keeping your spectacles in tip-top condition.
It really is worth taking a moment to learn the proper care techniques. Clean lenses make such a difference to your vision—it’s remarkable how much clearer everything becomes when your glasses are properly maintained. Most spectacle lenses nowadays are made from lightweight plastic materials, which are wonderfully safe and comfortable to wear, but they can be rather more susceptible to scratching than you might expect.
This is why knowing the right approach to cleaning makes such a difference. It’s all too easy to cause tiny scratches without realising it, particularly if you’re using the wrong cloth or cleaning method. These small scratches might not seem significant at first, but they do accumulate over time and can eventually affect the clarity of your vision.
The good news is that with the right technique and materials, keeping your lenses pristine is perfectly straightforward. Our guide walks you through the do’s and don’ts, so you can be confident you’re caring for your investment properly.
A few minutes spent learning the proper method really does pay dividends in the long run.
Why do I have to have my lenses thinned down?
We always recommend what we believe is the best product for our patients and sometimes this means we will recommend a thinned lens. This may be because of yout prescription or the lens design or the size and style of the frame.
We sometimes need to make lenses out of a special thinned lens material because of the frame construction. This is the case for rimless, inline and supra frames where a standard lens would be too brittle and would break too easily. Here the lens material choice is about strength rather than weight or thickness.
We always explain your options and why we are making our recommendations.
Sometimes it will be possible to proceed with a standard lens as long as you are happy to accept the added weight and thickness, but sometimes we will not be able to place your order without using the thinned lens.
I want sunglasses for bright days but don’t want two pairs
Sunglasses are fantastic for keeping your eyes safe from Ultra Violet and make both driving and walking safer and more comfortable on bright days – We always suggest polarised lenses because they offer the best glare reduction.
If however you do not want two pairs of glasses, we would suggest photochromic lenses which will automatically darken in the presence of UV. On a bright day they go dark and indoors they are clear. We use Transitions where possible as we find them quickest for lightening and darkening.
I would like to try Transitions but what if I don’t like them?
We try wherever possible to work with Essilor spectacle lenses as we find them to be of fantastic quality. All Transitions lenses ordered through Essilor come with a Love ’em or Leave’em warrantee – you can try them for a couple of weeks but if you find that they are not as you expected, we can return them to be remanufactured in a clear lens option at no additional cost.
This warrantee ensures that you do not end up dissatisfied with your purchase and often gives our patients the confidence to try something new.
And we will hold your hand through the whole process buy checking in regularly with you to see how you are enjoying Transitions. If there is any possibility that they will need to be changed, we will keep the contact going to make sure you do not go outside of your warrantee period.
