Performance & Technology

Ordinary photochromic lenses stop working behind a car windscreen because UV light can’t reach them. Traditional photochromic lenses contain molecules that react to UV radiation by darkening. Because modern car windscreens filter out nearly all UV light, the reaction can’t occur effectively. As a result, the lenses remain clear even when the sunlight outside is intense, reducing their usefulness for drivers.

Unlike ordinary photochromic lenses, Transitions® XTRActive™ lenses don’t rely solely on UV light to change. They also react to visible light, which passes easily through car windscreens. This means they darken effectively even while driving, giving better protection from glare and bright sunlight.
