What are dry eyes?
Dry eye occur when your tear glands don’t produce enough tears to lubricate your eyes. This condition can be uncomfortable and painful and can lead to lasting damage to the cornea or window of the eye. It can be caused by both medical and environmental factors.
The symptoms include:
- scratchy, dry, and painful sensation in both of your eyes
- feeling like something is in your eyes
- redness of the eye and inside of the eyelid
- mucus in the corners of your eyes, especially on waking
- light sensitivity
- tired eyes
- blurry vision
There are a number of factors that can cause dry eyes. These include:
- aging
- certain medications
- certain medical conditions
- environmental factors
- contact lens wear
- allergies

Currently, there is no permanent cure for dry eye disease. However, a number of options can help maintain moisture in the eyes. These can reduce symptoms and protect vision.
- keep your eyes clean.
- take regular breaks to rest your eyes when using a computer screen. Every 20 minutes look 20 metres away for 20 seconds.
- make sure your computer screen is at eye level so you do not strain your eyes.
- use a humidifier to stop the air getting dry.
- get plenty of sleep to rest your eyes.
- avoid cigarette smoke.
