One of my friends here on Anglesey is Richard, a Methodist minister, retired hairdresser and all-round good egg. He approached recently for a donation for his fund-raising events in support of Marie Curie nurses. Having supported Richard in some of his other fund-raising endeavors Jacksons was happy to donate a pair of Oakley sunglasses to help support this worthy cause.

Charity work for MacMillan and Marie Curie.

Some 16 years ago whilst working in my salon, I listened to ladies who spent their spare time is raising money for MacMillan and Marie Curie nurses. Hoping that I could help, I approached my local golf club, asking them to allow me to have the course for an afternoon on a Bank Holiday Sunday.

My first event I realised that just golfers alone playing would not make enough money to make the tournament worthwhile, so I visited the many businesses in Amlwch where I lived, asking them if they would sponsor a golf hole for a cost of fifty pounds, I managed to have each of the 18 holes sponsored, I also was given several things of value to raffle at auction, including Ray ban sunglasses, and a Chronograph watch from Mercedes, paintings and other valuables. The first tournament took place on a wet and windy Sunday in August, ladies from the Macmillan committee and others in the area made cakes and sandwiches which were given out to the competitors on the ninth hole. Unfortunately, the wind and rain made it difficult to sit and enjoy the wonderful food prepared for us! My first year raised £900 and taught me many lessons.

On being allowed to hold the tournament for a second year, I arranged for the local scout group to put up a large tent to have the food given out which allowed us to sit and enjoy! I also sent out invitations to other golf clubs on the island and approached several of the larger businesses in and around the Bangor area to sponsor the event. This resulted in some 20 teams of 4 taking the challenge of the golf course and, some and very generous donations! also more gifts to auction or raffle. This resulted in the amount of money raised to over £2000! The golf club and then realised that the afternoon of a Bank Holiday Sunday which is usually quiet was indeed very busy, with the competitors using the bar and dining facilities; which would otherwise have been empty, so what helped McMillan and Marie Curie also became great advantage to the golf club. From the third year onwards, I then organised entertainment in the evening to finish the golf day off with, charging £3. per ticket I was able to increase the amount of money raised to nearly £3,000. From then on, the tournament has gained momentum. In the 12th year of the event I had 50 teams of four completing; Plus, every whole sponsored and several wonderful raffle prizes, which 6 7 Richards fundraising efforts One of my friends here on Anglesey is Richard, a Methodist minister, retired hairdresser and all-round good egg. Here is Richards story in his own words allowed me to increase the amount of money donated to over £6,000. I then had 3 years off! Recently having joined a new golf club; which is only a nine-hole course and is quite small in membership, I decided to renew the golf competition it now takes place on the second Bank Holiday in May.

Starting from a new beginning

I now have asked people in Llangefni to sponsor the holes, and local businesses to donate prizes. This year my special Oakley sunglasses alone and raised over £150 – people were eager to buy ticket for a pound that would give them a chance to win the special sunglasses worth over £155. The event although smaller than in my last golf club, has raised over £2.000 which is donated directly to Marie Curie in Anglesey, the money to be used to help the nurses to care for those terminally ill. The money will be used in and around Anglesey; and not put into the central funds. It is only with the generous help of businesses and friends that allow me to raise money for this wonderful cause, to date over the 15 years I have run the events we have donated over £50,000 pounds to these wonderful causes and it’s a grateful thank you to all those who helped to raise this money by playing golf and generous giving!
